Organisation profile

The Advanced Social and Political Research Institute (ASPRI) was established at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Latvia in 2004 with the goal of advancing the potential of social sciences in Latvia. Its mission is to foster collaboration among Latvian researchers both nationally and internationally, to serve the public by analyzing and forecasting social issues, and to support evidence-based improvements in Latvia’s social and political processes.

ASPRI’s strategic leadership is provided by a council composed of representatives from the faculty’s departments. The institute is governed by a board made up of professors and associate professors appointed by these departments. ASPRI’s scientific staff includes over 40 members, comprising leading researchers, researchers, and research assistants.

The Institute’s main research areas are:

  • Latvia’s role in international relations, with a particular focus on relations with Russia and the European Union’s new neighboring countries,
  • democracy and minority rights,
  • regional development in Latvia as well as
  • media, information, and cultural studies.
