Organisation profile

Organisation profile

The BA School of Business and Finance was established in 1992 and has been registered as a scientific institution since 10 February 2016. Since 31 August 2025, the institution is integrated into the University of Latvia’s scientific ecosystem and continues its operations as an academic unit under the name University of Latvia BA School of Business and Finance (LU BASBF).
The strategic mission of LU BASBF is to provide research-based education in business and finance, fostering academic excellence through close cooperation with internationally recognised academic and industry partners.

Its strategic specialisation lies within the social sciences, with a particular emphasis on green and circular economy, digital finance, strategic resilience, and cybersecurity. Since 2019, the School has significantly expanded its research funding sources and volumes – ranging from internal grants and Erasmus+ partnership and knowledge alliance programmes to competitive national and EU-level programme projects (e.g., ERA-NET, Horizon Europe). It has also carried out commissioned research for public and private sector organisations.

More than 30 staff members are involved in research activities, including 15 lead researchers (comprising 5 full professors and 5 associate professors), as well as researchers, scientific assistants, doctoral students, and master’s students. Since 2023, the institution has received base and performance-based research funding from the Latvian state.

LU BASBF has achieved a remarkable and steadily growing research performance dynamic, reflected in the number and quality of scientific publications, citation metrics, collaboration with internationally recognised researchers and academic institutions and organisations, investment per FTE researcher (1PLE), and other performance indicators.

The School’s vision is to be a leading partner in modern finance and business education in the Baltic Sea Region. Its competitive strengths include high-quality interdisciplinary study programmes, strong links with the business community, advanced digital maturity, and sustainability-oriented governance.
