The Department of Computer Science provides academic and professional study programmes at bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. The Department of Computer Science also conducts research in computer science.

The mission of the University of Latvia to support the development of the computer science sector is:

  • to prepare highly qualified export-capable specialists for practical work in companies and public institutions, who would be able not only to design and develop complex information systems, but also to manage projects and independently master new technologies in a rapidly changing environment across the spectrum of the computer science sector;
  • to provide the computer science sector with academically educated specialists prepared for scientific work, who would be able to conduct research in computer science in Latvia, as well as to perform expert functions in evaluating new technologies and systems.

The Department of Computer Science consists of three laboratories, one group and one center:

  • The Methodological Laboratory of Computing Studies – The Linux Centre;
  • Laboratory for Lingual Computing;
  • Laboratory for Perceptual and Cognitive Systems;
  • Center for Quantum Computer Science;
  • ICT Terminology Professor Group.
