Organisation profile

The Department of Finance and Accounting was established at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of University of Latvia to promote high-quality education and research in the fields of finance, accounting, and auditing. It serves as a key academic unit dedicated to developing professional competence, analytical thinking, and applied skills essential for careers in financial management, public and corporate accounting, auditing, and financial analysis.

The department consists of more than ten experienced academic and administrative staff members. It supervises four specialized study programes: two bachelor's programes – “Finance Management” and “Accounting, Analysis and Audit” – and two master's programes – “Financial Economics” and “Accounting and Audit”. In addition to these, the department contributes significantly to other interdisciplinary programes within the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and is actively involved in the doctoral programme in “Economics and Business”.

Research within the department focuses on current developments in finance and accounting, addressing both national and international challenges. Key areas include digital transformation in financial practices, regulation of financial institutions and markets, corporate finance, public finance and taxation, as well as accounting standards, reporting, and audit. Emphasis is placed on integrating insights from the Latvian context into broader research, thereby contributing to both local relevance and global academic dialogue.
