The Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine was founded with the aim of developing research in the fields of oncology and oncoprophylaxis, as well as tuberculosis and sepsis; to conduct organised pilot studies on the optimisation of cancer screening, and to implement a population study unique in Europe for the prevention of stomach and intestinal cancer (GISTAR).

The Institute develops common patients’ with tumours and other patients’ biobanks intended to be part of the National Biobank structure. Workplaces for doctoral students, post-doctoral scientists and other new scientists are created on the basis of the institute. Residents and students are recruited for research work. The institute closely cooperates with Latvian research and medical institutions, private sector, and with leading research institutions in the Baltic region, Europe, the United States and Asia. The activity of the institute is interdisciplinary.

The institute conducts research in the following directions:

  • public health and disease prevention;
  • implementation of population studies;
  • screening and intervention studies;
  • clinical medicine, including oncology, microbiome and infection research (sepsis, tuberculosis, etc.), internal medicine and surgical pathology, laboratory medicine and visual diagnostics, as well as other natural sciences.
