Organisation profile

The Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Latvia, has been operating since 1991. It actively participates in international projects and events while integrating practical applications into the study process. The Institute conducts humanities and social sciences research, focusing mainly on philosophy and sociology.

The Institute strongly emphasizes interdisciplinary research. The philosophical research topics at the Institute include key aspects of Latvian philosophical thought, the history of ideas, contemporary Western philosophy, the translation of classical works, and issues related to the philosophy of religion and academic religious studies.  In sociological studies, its research focuses on cultural and comparative sociology and the sociology of social organization and change. Themes explored through national and international sociological research cover areas such as ethnopolitics, ethnic relations, migration processes, youth and education, social exclusion, aspects of public health, and oral history, which examines intergenerational historical memory, value transmission, and the role of oral history and biographical narratives in shaping collective identity.

The Institute publishes the periodicals “Ethnicity” and “Reliģiski-filozofiski raksti” (Religious-Philosophical Articles), which are indexed in the Scopus and EBSCO databases.
