His research examines the principle of favor defensionis—its origins, historical evolution, the leading approaches to interpreting its content, and the fundamental nature of this procedural construction. Jānis Dobelnieks’ academic work aims to clarify how the defence advantage operates within modern criminal procedure and how it should be balanced against the interests of justice.
By integrating practical courtroom experience with theoretical research, Jānis Dobelnieks provides students with a comprehensive understanding of criminal procedure and the role of defence rights in fair trial standards
