Abstract
A model for the electronic and geometric structure of the non‐bridging oxygen defect center in fused silica is presented. The structure of the center is determined by the dynamic Jahn‐Teller effect, which appears as a forming of an additional oxygen‐oxygen bond between the non‐bridging oxygen atom and another oxygen atom from the same silicon‐oxygen tetrahedron.
