Abstract

In this paper we have studied the spectroscopic properties of Mn4+ in four stannate pyrochlores A2Sn2O7 (A = La, Gd, Y, Lu). Photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation spectra were recorded at low temperature. The Mn4+ energy levels in all four hosts were calculated using the exchange charge model of crystal field. Consistent variation of the main spectroscopic features with the lattice constant and Mn–O distance are revealed. The findings of this combined experimental and theoretical study may be used to predict the Mn4+ spectroscopic characteristics in other similar materials.
