Abstract

The invention relates to the metallurgy and crystal growing industries, as well as to the physics and astronomy industries, where an electromagnetic field is used to maintain the molten zone and a shellless melting technology is used.
A method is proposed for implementing in-depth control over a molten sample maintained under EM levitation conditions using gas flows. The gas flow is used to mechanically shift and/or deform the sample in a levitated state using the pressure caused by the flow. By shifting the sample to areas of space with greater or lesser EM field intensity, the amount of heat released in the sample is increased or decreased. Heat exchange occurs between the sample and the gas flow as a result of convection, which can cool or heat the sample depending on the temperature of the gas flow relative to the sample. If the gas flow directed to the levitating sample is shifted from the center of mass of the sample, the levitating sample can be given rotation.
