Abstract
Along with digitalization, Internet of Things (IoT) solutions have been developed in various fields, but so far the role of these IoT solutions in education has not been specifically analyzed, nor has the role of education in supporting knowledge about IoT and ensuring that this becomes commonsense knowledge. Educational researchers need to structure their understanding of the different possibilities of IoT in order to construct knowledge about IoT solutions, understanding their technical capabilities, risks and applications. It is also necessary to move toward mastering the competencies of how to develop new technical solutions in order to offer practical and scientifically sound advice on providing an IoT for smart learning environments to empower learning and smart instructional practices to lay the foundations for future innovation. This chapter offers a conceptual view of the place and role of IoT in education, defining the directions in which it can be analyzed and offering a structural view of the directions in which knowledge about IoT needs to be developed.
