Abstract

The formation of M-shaped velocity profiles in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field is explained on the basis of a qualitative consideration of the equations of magnetohydrodynamics. The conditions of occurrence of such velocity structures are analyzed. The results have been experimentally tested by investigating the potential gradient distributions near sudden expansions and contractions in a mercury flow.
