Abstract
With the establishment of independent Latvian state and democratic higher education system, women were given full rights to access higher education, which was seen as one of the most important factors to improve the social status of women. The number of educated women and their representation in the professional field significantly increased, resulting in the need for a specific organization that would defend professional and economic interests of academically educated women. The Latvian Association of Academically Educated Women was established as the most important organization of this kind. The article describes the ideology and structure of the association, considers the main activities and problems, as well as co-operation with the International Federation of Academically Educated Women.
