Abstract

The article focuses on the processes in the Union of Soviet Writers of Latvia during the second half of the 1960s related to the proportion of national cultural issues. The Writers’ Union was an important organisation in organising the literary process of the Latvian SSR and enhancing ideological control, but at the same time, starting from the second half of the 1960s, the organisation became a refuge for the creative intelligentsia - increasingly protecting the members of the Writers’ Union against the campaigns initiated by the Communist Party and trying to make the power reckon with the national peculiarities. The leaders of the Writers’ Union paid more and more attention not only to professional but also to social problems. As well as important issues were initiated and addressed - the Latvian Literary Heritage Commission was founded, the Latvian Literature school curricula and the tidying up and honouring of writers’ memorials were discussed, and the Poetry Days - a tradition important to Latvian identity - was started.
