Abstract
The low temperature spectroscopic properties of Bi3+ impurities in the double perovskite, La2MgTiO6, is examined in this work. The luminescence is interpreted on the basis of localized Bi3+ 3P0,1 → 1S0 transition. Band structure calculations reveal that the bottom of the conduction band is composed of Ti4+ 3d orbitals. In La2MgTiO6, the Bi3+ 3P0,1 states fall below the Ti4+ 3d0 conduction band which permits the first observation of luminescence from the localized Bi3+ 3P0,1 excited state in a titanate host lattice.
