Abstract

This article looks into the personality and poetry of Latvian poet Ināra Kaija Eglīte (1948-2020). The author analyses the poetry of Eglīte, which was collected in 2018 in the collection “Kliedziens starp āboliem. Piecdesmit gadus vēlāk. Tieši laikā”. Eglīte represents a relative modernist movement of the 1960s, her texts reveal features such as graphic poetry and modernist tendencies. Eglīte’s book was not published during her active, creative period, so the article also outlines her relationship with the poetic canon of the sixties and the ambiguous attitude of the Soviet authorities towards the author. The analysis of Eglīte’s poetry is based on its codes and symbols, which develop Eglīte’s poetry on a multidimensional level, allowing the author to be compared with the greatest examples of modern poetry in the history of Latvian literature. The article is structured in two sections, first outlining the place of Eglīte in the history of Latvian literature and culture, as well as in the key context of Soviet poetry, during which Eglīte’s poetic texts were written, and then focusing on some of the highlights in the only currently available reception material, collected in the collection “Kliedziens starp āboliem”; it also includes art historian Ieva Kalniņa’s extensive interview “Apgrieztā Maslova piramīda” with Eglīte, which was also used as one of the sources for the analysis of Eglīte’s personality and historical context.
