Abstract

The demand for mercury-free UV disinfection technologies has driven an increasing interest in UV light-emitting diode (UV-LED)-based systems. Due to the comparatively lower radiant power of UV-C LED, careful optimization of the LED arrangement is required to achieve sufficient and homogeneous irradiation. In this work, a simplified numerical model is used to analyze the distribution of UV irradiance inside a portable disinfection chamber with dimensions 40 × 50 × 30 cm. Commercial UV-LED strips are modeled as point sources with cosine-power (Lambertian-type) angular emission. Different LED configurations, source-to-target distances, and wall reflectance conditions are investigated. The results show that both the LED layout and the chamber wall reflectivity strongly affect the homogeneity of the irradiation, demonstrating the usefulness of the model for preliminary design optimization.
