Abstract
Social insurance was an important part of the state welfare policy in Latvia in the 1920s. One of its most important elements consisted of the health insurance funds. During the 1920s, the health insurance funds were run by various political forces. The aim of this article is to study the political aspects of social insurance, using the example of the activities of the Riga Trade Union Central Bureau in the health insurance funds in the second half of the 1920s. The article provides a general description of the main aspects of social insurance and the politicization of health insurance funds. Based on previously unused sources on the operation of the central bureau in health insurance funds, the article focuses on an analysis of its policies, coordination mechanisms and the main features.
