Soluble lipoxygenase activity in rye seedlings as related to endogenous and exogenous ethylene and wounding

Abstract

Changes in soluble lipoxygenase (EC 1.13.11.12) activity related to endogenous and exogenous ethylene production and wounding were studied in the growing primary leaves of light-grown rye (Secale cereale L.) seedlings. Maximum lipoxygenase activity was localized in the most juvenile, rapidly growing leaf tissues of rye seedlings and coincided with a high rate of ethylene production. Treatment of rye seedlings with 10 mM ethephon or 50 mM 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) resulted in activation of lipoxygenase. Detachment of leaves also induced an increase of lipoxygenase activity.
