Abstract

The space domain is more than just commercial applications or engineering problems only. Expanding Humanity to outer space should be seen as a quest for a better human civilization on earth. This involves all aspects of humanity such as sociology, philosophy, and the arts. As a non-profit organization, the Space Renaissance Initiative (SRI) promotes intellectual discussions about the justification of expanding humanity into outer space. Unfortunately, educational institutes around the world lack intellectual and philosophical aspects of the space domain and focus more on engineering and commercialization. The SRI, represented by the Towards the Young Generation Committee, has organized a fully online program that is called Expanding Humanity into Outer Space (EHTOS) in 2024. EHTOS is a hackathon targeting youth from around the world. The aim of EHTOS is to introduce the intellectual aspect and the justification of human civilization in space. Students and young professionals were requested to design a rotating habitat motivated by the vision and manifesto of SRI. This paper describes the event educational lectures, the preparation, and the output. EHTOS 2024 is just the beginning of a series of activities in the coming years. Plans for the future will be also explained.
