Abstract
This chapter follows the significant transformations in reading habits of Latvians that took place in the 1840s and 1850s. These changes are comparable to the processes that characterize German- speaking countries from the last quarter of the eighteenth century onward and have been designated as ‘the reading revolution.’ This period is marked by a move away from the tradition of intensive reading to that of extensive reading, pointing towards a democratization of reading and also indicating the growing importance of secular texts in Latvian society.
