Anthicidae (Coleoptera) of Madagascar: The Faunal Composition, New Descriptions, Rediscoveries, and an Annotated Checklist

A complete, annotated checklist of the ant-like flower beetles (Coleoptera: Anthicidae) recorded in Madagascar is provided for the first time. The list comprises 117 species and subspecies. The following seven species new to science are described and illustrated: Macratria durrellisp. nov., Nitorus antankaranasp. nov., N. caviculussp. nov., N. ciliatussp. nov., N. saxatilissp. nov., N. tsingysp. nov., and Telesinus discolorsp. nov. Two new combinations are made: Nitorus caligans (Bonadona, 1958) comb. nov. and N. maculatus (Bonadona, 1958) comb. nov. (both from PseudoleptaleusPic, 1900). Original combination is restored for Leptaleus breviorFairmaire, 1897. The following three new synonyms are introduced based on the examined type material: Anthicus atricornisPic, 1913 = A. rudebecki Bonadona in van Hille, 1961syn. nov. = A. meruanusBuck, 1965syn. nov.; Macratria testaceilabrisPic, 1940 = M. testaceilabris var. sikoraiPic, 1940syn. nov. Nineteen species are rediscovered after a long period of absent records. Colour images are provided for the first time for adults of several Madagascan taxa. New faunistic records of 52 taxa and results of a brief biogeographic assessment are presented. The calculated endemism rate in the Madagascan Anthicidae species and subspecies ranks taxa exceeds 80%, in genus rank taxa - 8%.
