COMBLIKE INSTABILITY IN THIN LAYERS OF A MAGNETIC LIQUID.

Observation of the spectrum of the instabilities of magnetic liquids in thin horizontal layers in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field normal to the layer was reported by authors earlier. This article investigates this type of instability under the conditions of vertical thin layers; in the case under consideration, the gradient of the field can play a prominent role. The physical conditions for the appearance of the instability considered here are similar to the working conditions of some devices which use magnetic liquids, in a view of which the results reported may be found useful in their design.
