Kopsavilkums

The possibility of using a traveling magnetic field in the processes involved in the castings of thin-walled elongated ingots with a developed surface has been studied. A characteristic feature of this method, unlike, for example, casting under electromagnetic pressure or under any other forced (excess) pressure on the metal filling the casting mold, involves a fundamentally different nature of forces acting on the moving liquid metal. If in conventional technologies the increase in the rate at which a casting mold is filled with metal comes about as a result of an increase of the hydrostatic (metallostatic) head, then when the mold is filled under the action of a traveling magnetic field the acceleration of metal flow comes about as a consequence of excitation within the metal of electromagnetic body forces. This leads to an increase in the integral force as the metal front moves through the traveling field. It is obvious that the above-indicated diverse nature of the forces acting on the metal flowing through the casting mold must also generate different functional relationships between velocity and the time required to fill the casting mold.
