Kopsavilkums
Communication is the transmission or exchange of information in such a way that it is understood by all of its participants. The communicator chooses the most suitable channel for this purpose and makes the best use of the possibilities provided by the language. The rise of the Internet and the rapid development of technologies has also affected communication. Every day more and more people are immersed in the virtual world created by the Internet. During the time of the Coronavirus pandemic, communication in the Internet has become particularly essential. One can observe a rapid digitalization of everyday life, as the Internet connects written and spoken language. It is possible to communicate in the Internet both in synchronous mode (online chat) and in asynchronous mode (e-mail). People can contact each other and share their news and experiences all the time, without meeting face-to-face. Social networking sites are websites especially created for communication with other people (friends, relatives, schoolmates, acquaintances). Nowadays social networks offer various ways to communicate: to publish information in diaries or blogs, to create groups of interests, to send letters, to exchange photos or audio and video files, etc. The aim of this paper is to give a summary of the graphical means used in the texts posted in the social networks Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. 400 syntactic constructions were excerpted, and some of them (written in bold) are reflected in this paper. Each example is followed by a reference about the social network and the author of the text, given in brackets. This research employed descriptive, comparative and quantitative methods observing the usage of emoticons, capital letters, punctuation marks (e.g. exclamation marks, question marks, full stops and inverted comas) and other graphical resources in a text.
