Jāņa Endzelīna terminoloģiskais mantojums un tā apzināšanas iespējas

Most Jānis Endzelīns’s linguistics works cover studies on the grammar, dialects, and lexicon of the Latvian language. However, in his almost sixty years of scientific activity, a major topic was also terminological issues. For Endzelīns, the development of a national terminology is an integral part of the development of vocabulary and an essential component of language culture work. It is useful to analyze the terminological heritage of J. Endzelīns in three aspects: (1) his participation in commissions that dealt with terminological issues and his participation in the editing of terminological resources, (2) his approach to term formation and preferred patterns of word formation, and (3) neologisms proposed by him and suggested as relevant terms. His most significant contributions to Latvian terminology were his participation in the development of Latvian grammatical terms and his work in the Terminology Commission of the Ministry of Education (1919–1921) and the Terminology Commission of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (from 1946). Among the dictionaries edited by him, it is important to highlight the repeated editions of the orthographic dictionary (1924, 1936 ⁴) and the dictionary of foreign words (1926, 1934 ²) compiled by Eduards Ozoliņš, and his participation in the creation of the “Tautsaimniecības vārdnīca” (1944). Terminological issues are touched upon in his recommendations on language culture “Dažādas valodas kļūdas” (1932 ⁴) and in popular articles published during the German occupation, as well as in the protocols of the Language department of the Riga Latvian Society. As a promising direction for further research of his terminological heritage, we note studies on the fate of the neologisms proposed by J. Endzelīns and the possible reasons why some words became part of modern Latvian language while others did not.
