Kopsavilkums
The article examines the situation in Latvia during the War of Independence in 1919–1920, looking at it through an hitherto unexplored aspect of social life ‒ crimes against civilians committed by Latvian army soldiers. Аnalysis of the most serious crimes is used as an example. The conclusion is drawn that the crimes of Latvian soldiers against civilians, similarly as in the armies of other European countries, were the consequences of prolonged warfare and the resulting demoralization, which in the case of Latvia was additionally influenced by historically complicated relations with the Baltic Germans. During the war time situation, crimes were investigated, but the punishment received was often inadequately light, or the crimes were not punished at all.
