The emergence of postmodernism in Latvian literary culture

This study investigates the evolution of postmodernism in Latvian literary culture following the Soviet Union’s collapse. It traces its evolution from its initial phase as an unrecognized literary form in the late 1970s and 1980s, through the period of theoretical engagement in the late 1980s and early 1990s, to its conceptual maturity in the mid-1990s and beyond. The article examines the influence of Western cultural elements on post-Soviet Latvian culture and its complex relationship with Latvian national identity. It underscores the significance of pivotal figures and genres in defining Latvian postmodernism and differentiating it from its Western counterparts.
