Kopsavilkums
The article looks at historical novel by Jānis Mauliņš “Pēdas / The Tracks”, drawing attention to the context of its creation. The novel was published in 1980, reflecting the situation in the first half of the 17th century in the eastern part of Vidzeme/Livland region. The story of peasant resistance to landlords in the novel was associated with the Latvian situation during the Soviet occupation. Thus, the novel can be interpreted in the framework of postcolonial discourse as a writer-designed model for Latvian future. The novel continues a tradition of national romanticism in historical prose, adapting to the situation of the second half of the 20th century. The film “Vilkatis Toms / Werewolf Tom” based on this novel was made at the Riga Film Studio in 1983. The current article compares the narra-tive features of the novel and film.
